Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings fort its fruit in its season whose leaf also shall not wither; and whatever he does shall prosper. Psalm 1:1-3
Wow! What a promise from our Lord. We can be blessed just by putting Him first. I read these verses to my children yesterday and asked, “what does blessed mean”? Samuel said that it means we are thankful and happy. That was a good answer. But, I went one step further and asked good old Webster. Sure enough Webster agreed: “bringing happiness and thankfulness.” That was definition six. This fits into our human way of thinking. But I can’t help but think my God had the first meaning in mind: “consecrated; sacred; holy; sanctified.” Do you get what God is telling us? He wants us to be sanctified and holy; set apart for a higher calling. All we have to do is put Him first in our lives.
This may seem like an easy task, but is it? I’ve been thinking about how God has blessed Robby and I over the years. I know it is because we choose to honor God in all we do. But, let me tell you that isn’t always easy. There have been times we’ve gone against the flow of everyone around us. We’ve had to stand up for what we believe God is telling us through His Word. I can remember a time when we made enemies instead of friends because Satan was at work in another’s life. We’ve had to make decisions to follow God’s plan when human logic made more sense.
Delighting in God’s Law and meditating on His Word day and night is a choice we make each day. It is an action with a great promise. One God had fulfilled in our lives time and time again.
You may not know this but, we were told at one time that I had unexplained infertility. Now we have five beautiful blessings. Count them…FIVE. Do a little math. Five plus two (Robby and I) makes seven. That is God’s number.
There was a time we lived in a small trailer so rough and ragged the owner didn’t even have it up for rent. But, we were homeless as a result of standing up for Christ. The women offered us this place rent free. We did such a good job fixing it up she was able to rent it out after we left. Now we live on about 10 acres of land in a four bedroom ranch style house. God is good.
Robby and I have certainly had some serious medical problems over the past several years, but we are certainly blessed to have good insurance to help pay for all those bills. God directed our path to a Chiari specialist. The surgeries we’ve had have been tough to recover from but our physical condition is so much better than it was before surgeries.
God provides financially so I am able to stay home and home school our children. Sure we may not have some of the extras that two income families indulge in or go on fancy vacations to exotic locations but our needs are met. We praise the Lord for providing this opportunity to me.
I have no doubt that God continues to bless us–give us reason to be happy and thankful–because we choose daily to put Him first.
What about you?
